Backend as a ServiceSupabase

Supabase

The open-source Firebase alternative. PostgreSQL database, auth, storage, realtime, edge functions — all in one. 1M+ developers chose Postgres over NoSQL. The backend that lets you ship solo.

Honest take: Supabase is what Firebase should have been if Google cared about developers. Real PostgreSQL instead of NoSQL. SQL instead of weird query syntax. Row-level security that actually makes sense. Auth that just works. Realtime subscriptions. Edge Functions. And it is open source — you can self-host if you want out. I migrated 3 Firebase projects and never looked back. The free tier is generous (500MB database, 1GB storage, 50K auth users). The dashboard is beautiful. The docs are excellent. But it is not perfect: the learning curve for RLS policies trips up beginners. The function cold starts can be annoying. And at $25/mo for Pro, the jump from free is steep if you just need a bit more storage. Also, it is not Firebase for mobile — the mobile SDKs are less mature. For web apps and SaaS products, Supabase is the best backend-as-a-service in 2026.

The Verdict

Supabase is the best backend-as-a-service for web developers in 2026. Real PostgreSQL, open source, generous free tier, and a developer experience that makes Firebase feel outdated. If you are building a web app or SaaS, start here. For mobile-first apps, Firebase still has better SDKs. For everything else, Supabase is the future.
